As a former partner in the litigation department of one of the world's largest law firms, McDermott Will & Emery, equity partner in Berger Schatz, a firm specializing in family law, and highly sought-after lecturer in pre-marital and post-nuptial law, Mr. Katz brings a wealth of experience and credentials to his role as co-principal of Chicago's newest matrimonial law firm.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin (B.A. 1985) and Loyola University of Chicago School of Law (J.D. 1989), he served as senior member of the Loyola Law Journal (1987-1989) and wrote and published an article on family law that paved the way for his career passions to follow.
Admitted to the Illinois State Bar in 1989, Mr. Katz has been actively involved throughout his career in the Chicago Bar Association (CBA), Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) and American Bar Association (ABA). He served on the ISBA's Family Law Committee and also as co-chairman of the CBA's Young Lawyers Division of the Family Law Committee.
A popular speaker and well-published writer on a wide range of family and matrimonial law topics, Mr. Katz has lectured throughout much of the U.S., including talks before the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the ISBA, the CBA and the National Business Institute. He was actively involved in the early foundation of the expedited child support program in the Circuit Court of Cook County.
Among his published works: an article on Dissipation for the book entitled "Tax and Financial Planning Strategies in Divorce"; a chapter on Postnuptial Agreements, published in the Illinois Family Law Handbook by the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education; and the co-authoring with Katz & Stefani partner, Amanda Clayman, of an article entitled "When Your Elderly Clients Marry: Prenuptial Agreements and Other Considerations," published in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Journal.
While at McDermott, Will & Emery Mr. Katz ultimately specialized in domestic and family law with partner Sandra Murphy, continuing his family and matrimonial law focus as a partner at Berger Schatz. During his nearly two decades in practice, Mr. Katz has represented numerous high-profile matrimonial law clients in the worlds of business, sports and entertainment. He was recently selected by the Leading Lawyers Network and Super Lawyers Network as a top family law practitioner in Illinois.
